Homework due Tuesday Nov 30 11:59PM:
Read Barbara Ehrenreich's “Maid to Order: The Politics of Other Women's Work” 479-495 and compose a blog response based on ONE of the following prompts:
1. Consider what audience this piece was written for. What assumptions does Ehrenreich make about this audience?
2. Consider Ehrenreich's ethos. What is the central argument of this piece? In what ways does her personal experience build her case?
3. Ehrenreich incorporates a range of research and statistics into her essay. Which statistical examples surprised you? Which are most persuasive? Least persuasive? Why?

Matthew's Community Narrative
I think for my community narrative I am going to write about the LIVESTRONG community that was created by Lance Armstrong. I have been a member of this community ever since the yellow bands were made to raise money for cancer research. This community is for a great cause, and the fact that Lance Armstrong was able to overcome cancer and still be an amazing athlete makes me proud to be a member. I'm sure a lot of you are also a member of this community because it is so large and popular, which I also think is cool. If one man can inspire an entire country, then I think that says a lot about this community. Let me know if you guys think this is a good topic to write about. Thanks!

Great topic. The LIVESTRONG movement is a strong community, and there is a plethora of information about this community that you can use in your research.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who has been a member for several years, you will have plenty of perspective to share. Have you thought about what personal account you want to include in your narrative? You have a lot of options. Lance Armstrong is definitely a Tipping Person in a lot of ways, and you could focus on when you first learned about him and the LIVESTRONG campaign. This sounds great - start drafting!
I really like that you're writing about the LIVESTRONG campaign. I remember when this campaign first started and all it took was one person to wear the bands, then everyone was wearing them around school and in the community. I think you'll have a lot of good research to support your narrative. I'm sure that plenty of people have told their personal stories and life experiences with cancer in response to the campaign. This adds a little bit more creativity to your narrative. Another tipping point caused by the LIVESTRONG bands were the creation of other bands. Soon after the yellow bands came out, pink bands were released in support of breast cancer and orange bands in support of diabetes. You have a lot to go off of!
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of writing about the LIVESTRONG community is a very good idea. I remember when the LIVESTRONG bracelets first came out, you could not find them anywhere in stores. My mom went all over the city looking for a bracelet for me because everyone else at school had one. Not only was the LIVESTRONG movement a huge fad, this huge fad was in support of a great cause. That year for Christmas I gave all of my friends LIVESTRONG bracelets because they were so hard to find. I think that the tipping point for this LIVESTRONG bracelets was simply the fact that everyone had them.
