Danielle's Community Narrative

Hey everyone! Hope you had a good weekend!

I am going to do my community narrative on the competitive sports community. I grew up playing softball on a travel team. It is something that is very time consuming and takes up a lot of your life. Because of that, it creates a very close group. Everyone in that group has the same passion and drive to play and be around the sport.

There is a tipping point though. There are kids who grew up in this community and as they get older the pressure mounts. After a while, some can't handle the intensity anymore. Often it is caused by parents or coaches who don't realize how it effects the kids. I've noticed that when one person quits, at least one oter will shortly afterwards. And this trend keeps spreading.

Hopefully I can expand on it a little more! We'll see!
Thanks, Danielle

  1. Danielle, this sounds good. I recommend that you go ahead and narrow your topic from the competitive sports community to the particular softball community that you belonged to. You do not have to do this, but competitive sports is a big topic to tackle in itself, and I'm sure you have plenty to say about the softball travel team. This community probably shares standards with the larger competitive sports community, but also has its own characteristics in place.

I'm glad you brought up the trend of athletes quitting at a certain age. Whether this decision is influenced by a coach, parent, captain or teammate, this is a common trend. Do you know what you want to describe for your personal account? If you do decide to focus on softball, you can describe a particular incident that caused some of your teammates to quit. This sounds good so far!

  2. I think this is a great idea, I am doing trying to write my narrative on the football community here at JMU. I understand how people do tend to lose thier competitiveness in their sport. I even kno how that feels personally.
