Alex's Community Narrative

Hey everyone,
Im going to do my community narrative on different diseases and how they affect families overall. Growing up my family overall had different medical problems. My little brother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. We never knew where these diseases came from because nobody else in my family including all relatives have them. My older brother has allergies to nuts and hair from different animals like horses and dogs. All these things changed my family such as never having a dog in our house or waking up at 3 in the morning to check my little brothers blood sugar to make sure he is fine. I always thought this was intresting because all families have different medical problems which changes a family overall.

Thanks let me know if you think this is a good idea or not

  1. Hi Alex -

This sounds like a strong topic. You may want to narrow your focus from diseases in general to a specific disease such as Type 1 Diabetes or Celiac Disease. You could further clarify your topic by speaking from a community of people growing up with siblings who have a particular disease.

Incorporating some research about Type 1 Diabetes and/or Celiac Disease will complement your personal experience with your brother nicely. I think you're ready to go ahead and start drafting your narrative.

  2. I think your idea is great! My little brother has asthma and is also allergic to peanuts. At one point my mom was tested for Celiac disease and my grandma had some sort of problem when she was growing up...I don't know how to say this scientifically...but her intestines where looped funny, they didn't wrap around each other the same way a normal person's do, so sometimes her food would be blocked from digesting properly. We've had breast cancer and esophageal cancer in the family as well. But anyway the point is I know where you’re coming from! I would be really interested in reading your paper when you’re done! It really does seem like a great idea.

  3. I think this is a great idea. Like you said every family has medical problems, so I think alot of people in the class will be able to relate to your topic including me, because I had some family members that have or had cancer or diabetes.
