Hey guys,
I'm not sure if my idea will work or not, so let me know what you think. I belong to a communtiy of people who grew up with divorced parents. There are so many of us, that we're not all connected like people from the same high school, but I think growing up with divorced parents provides a totally different expirence for us than for those growing up with parents who stay together.
Some people included a tipping point in their blog and others didn't, so if I need to include one I would probably just mention several well-known divorce cases that made divorce more common. I don't know exactly when it became more popular, but I know that divorce didn't use to happen as often as it does now.
Thanks for any comments or advice!

Homework due Tuesday Nov 30 11:59PM:
Read Barbara Ehrenreich's “Maid to Order: The Politics of Other Women's Work” 479-495 and compose a blog response based on ONE of the following prompts:
1. Consider what audience this piece was written for. What assumptions does Ehrenreich make about this audience?
2. Consider Ehrenreich's ethos. What is the central argument of this piece? In what ways does her personal experience build her case?
3. Ehrenreich incorporates a range of research and statistics into her essay. Which statistical examples surprised you? Which are most persuasive? Least persuasive? Why?

This is a good topic, Katie. Growing up with divorced parents is a community in itself even if it is a HUGE group that is not necessarily unified through a common meeting point. People who grow up with divorced parents have a common set of habits, expectations, and challenges that they deal with. Like you said, there is a unique experience that these community members share which is different from children who grow up with parents who are married, with a single parent, with grandparents, etc.
ReplyDeleteBecause this community is so large and all of the members do not interact with each other, you may want to narrow your topic to a particular community of people who do interact. Did you have a particular set of friends who all had divorced parents? Are you familiar with organization that serves as a resource or support group for children with divorced parents? I'm not saying that you have to narrow your topic this way, but I do think it would be easier for you to write about a specific group of people within this larger community. Keep working on this one.
Hi Katie,
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a topic that has so much potential! You could capture your audience by making your paper a "life in my shoes" kind of style or maybe something else like your own personal experiences and/or facts about divorce. Whatever you decide will be great and go for it!
I've had troubles growing up too, but nothing really can compare to a divorce. Maybe include an appropriate tone in your paper so each person who reads it can empathize with you. I have an idea for a hook; you could use your favorite quote and draw ideas off of it.
Best of luck to you!!
Hey Katie,
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a very good topic due to the fact that so many people belong to this community. As someone who grew up in a family with divorced parents I often felt that I was one of the only people who had divorced parents. In reality statistics show that 1 in 2 marriages end in divorce. With almost half the entire country dealing with divorce, the community of children with divorced parents is very large. This community has plenty of stories and ideas that could be conveyed in your narrative.
I hope that Helps!
