Hi everyone!
I was thinking about researching some background information on facebook such as who created it and when. I was also going to look into how many members there are.
Some possible ideas for tipping ideas:
Form spring, default pictures of celebrity look-a-likes, games (Farmville, fishville, cube crash), statuses, etc.
If you have any other ideas/suggestions please let me know
Alexa,
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous! This is such an awesome idea because you are absolutely right! I think since arriving at JMU I've met ONE person who didn't have facebook. That's a smart plan to research the history of it a bit, just to get some background. As for a tipping idea I think you could perhaps have something stronger than the "extras" on facebook. Perhaps the news feed for example has a little more impact on people compared to Farmville or Fishville. That's just an idea though, do with it what you would like. Good luck with your paper!
Alexa,
ReplyDeleteDid you know about the facebook movie that's coming out ("The Social Network")? It's interesting to think that one site could lead to this huge following of users, so much so that there is a movie for it.
Also, in my Geography class, the professor told us which countries use facebook the most. I think number 3 was Indonesia? But don't quote me on that. It justs helps to see that because of the internet and facebook, our world really is shrinking since we can stay in personal contact with someone so far away.
Good luck! It sounds cool already!
Valerie

ReplyDeleteThis is a good topic! I do recommend narrowing it or at least choosing a few particular aspects of the facebook community to focus on such as facebook groups or facebook applications.
You sound like you are on a great track for your research. The creator of facebook has an interesting background. Definitely consider looking at trends in the history of facebook; facebook is truly a Tipping Point in itself. When I was a freshman at JMU five years ago, facebook was only a network for (predominantly Amreican) university students because you had to have an @edu email address to join. Facebook chat, facebook applications, and facebook advertisements did not exist.
Keep in mind that your audience for this narrative is people who do not belong to your community. Even though it may seem like almost everyone is on facebook, you need to write your narrative as if you are addressing someone who has never heard of it before. This may seem like a challenge, but imagine how you would explain facebook to an older relative who has never used it before. I think you're ready to start your draft!
That's really creative. All this talk about communities in class and Facebook never even crossed my mind. It is a big part of keeping in touch with family and friends while we are all away at school, so you may be able to use that in order to connect it to other communities you are a part of from your home town or other things of that nature. Very jealous of such a creative idea!
