Ashley Kellner's Community Narrative Project

Hey everyone!

I was thinking about doing my Community Narrative Project on the Down Syndrome Community. For the past six years I've been an after school nanny to twin boys with Down Syndrome. They were also born prematurely so had serious brain, heart, and stomach complications. These boy's have really shaped who I am today. Because of them I have become actively involved in the Special Olympics and the Buddy Program and wish to become a Speech Therapist, so I can work with children similar to them. They are a huge part of my life, so I am a part of their community.

  1. I think this is a really cool idea, definitely an unique choice. I have a friend who has twin brothers with Down Syndrome and I've heard a lot about the programs, so this is really cool. I think you'll be able to make it personal but also add some facts about the syndrome which will make it interesting for the reader. good luck!

  2. This sounds great, Ashley! This is a good subject because there is plenty of literature out there about Down Syndrome, and you sound like you have enough substantial firsthand experience to create a really moving narrative.

Have you thought about how you want to describe your personal experience? You may want to position yourself as a member of this community as a nanny as you said. You also have the opportunity to draw your narrative from the perspective of the Special Olympics or Buddy Program as these are both communities in themselves.

  3. I really like this idea. I have not had any personal experience with kids who have Down Syndrome but everyone I know who has always has a story on how these kids have impacted their lives in a positive way. It won't be hard to find any facts and your personal experience will make your narrative that much stronger. I'm sure you'll do great!
