Andrew's community blog

Hi guys,
I will be writing about being in the Taiwanese community. As a Taiwanese-American, my cultural identity has always been important to me. This is the community that I was born into, and it would be easy for me to share with everyone that has no clue where this little island that the dutch explorers called "Formosa" (Beautiful Island in dutch) is.

  1. This sounds like a fantastic topic, Andrew! I would love to read about the Taiwanese culture. Being a Taiwanese-American is a community in itself. In the "Non Dimenticar Means 'Don't Forget'" essay that we read, Leslie describes her Italian-American community and how she incorporates pieces of her Italian heritage into her American lifestyle.

Have you thought about a particular story or memory to focus on for your personal account? Like Leslie did, you may want to focus on a particular tradition that your family maintains while living in America. You could also talk about clashes between the two cultures or transitions or adjustments you made after moving to the USA. I'm sure you have plenty of experiences to draw upon, and I'm looking forward to reading your narrative. Feel free to begin working on your first draft!

  2. I think this topic would be a great idea! I am doing a topic similar to this one, except with my Latvian community. It sounds like you would have a lot to talk about. Maybe you could incorporate some of the history involved in that community or some of the big traditions.

  3. This sounds like a great idea! I don't know much about the Taiwanese community, but it sounds very interesting. Maybe you can mention influential people in the culture as "tipping people".
