Emilie's Community Narrative

Hey guys, I'm thinking of doing my project on being a member of the REACH community, which is a Christian-based program that holds weeklong mission trips to low-income communities. I went down to West Virginia these past two summers with over 400 other high school students from all over the country, and we worked to fix up homes for less fortunate families and spent time talking to them because a lot of them are living alone and don't have family or friends around to talk to.
I'm thinking that the tipping point in my project would be the fact that the first year, our group left New Jersey with five students, and upon returning and talking to people about our experiences, we were able to kick that number up to twenty seven this past summer. This shows that mission trips, which were once not a popular thing to do in my area, are becoming more widely known and people are gaining the interest in attending themselves.
Let me know what you guys think!

  1. Emilie,
I think this is a wonderful idea! It sounds to me that you have a very strong Tipping Point because I'm sure that you are apart of a very small minority of those who stick with dancing. I hope you make that clear since your tipping idea is so strong. I have a couple friends who are dancers and I know the tolls it took on them throughout high school so I hope that you really emphasize the time and deication it takes to stick with it! Good luck with your paper!

  2. Emilie -

This is a great topic. You sound like you have a substantial amount of first hand experience to draw upon, and I imagine there is also some information you can reference as research about what REACH is and what expectations and ideals it represents.

I also think its really beneficial that you've participated in this community for two years so you have two different experiences to reference. It does sound like a Tipping Point took place if the number of students increased by 5x on the second trip. Imagine if 100 volunteers attend the next year?

  3. Emilie,
I think this would be an awesome topic! I have never heard of this group before and I'm sure not many other people have either. It would be a great way to spread the word on this awesome program. Since you have been part of this community for two years, you obviously have a connection with the REACH program so you would have a lot to talk about.
