Hey Everybody,
For my community narrative project I am going to be writing about being a part of the gay community. When I think of all the communities that I belong to I first think of the JMU community, my high school community, my hometown community, as well as the gay community. For my project I want to write about many topics within the gay community including, stereotypes, bullying and harassment, human and legal rights, and other social issues that are faced by members of this community on a daily basis. I hope that by writing about this community I can bring light to a subject that is often not given much attention and often considered inconsequential.
Hopefully I can expand on that some more, any advice and or comments would be greatly appreciated!

ReplyDeleteThis is a great topic! You have a lot of potential ground to cover, but I think if you focus on how some of your personal experiences relate to these bigger issues, you will be in a good place. Instead of trying to tackle all of the social issues you list, you may want to focus on one or two.
I recommend reading "Is This Who I Am?—Fitting into the Stereotype" by Nicholas Pierpont Corbell: http://www.jmu.edu/evision/Volume9/Corbell.html
This is a student narrative that was published in E-Vision a couple years ago. This author focuses on breaking stereotypes associated with homosexuality. Do not feel like you need to immitate this essay; I just think its a good reference. I'm looking forward to reading your first draft!
I think this is an awesome idea. I personally have a lot of friends that are part of this community and i see the hardships they go through because of it. I also think you should focus on maybe one or two of the topics because you will be able to go into more depth with just two rather then five or six. I think you'll do great! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI think many people will be interested in hearing about your personal story. I have not encountered many people in the GLBT community. I think people will appreciated hearing what it is like from your point of view.
