Hey everybody,
For my community narrative i was considering writing about something involving music. Haven't decided whether i want to write about listening to music in general or a specific genre. If i decide on the later i think i will choose electronica which is a lesser known style of music that i am a fan of. Since it isn't played on the radio with any regularity most people are not familiar with any of the artists who are apart of this genre. Having the good fortune of growing up in the city, i am apart of the community which goes to see these artists perform in local venues which is often there only outlet for exposure to the public. Its a very unique style of music often associated with techno but there are a number of differences between the two. Saying they are the same thing is similar to considering classic rock and today's rock as being the same. Anyways, i love listening to electronica as well as going to shows to hear it live so i think i will write about this wild in the fast lane community which i am apart of.

Homework due Tuesday Nov 30 11:59PM:
Read Barbara Ehrenreich's “Maid to Order: The Politics of Other Women's Work” 479-495 and compose a blog response based on ONE of the following prompts:
1. Consider what audience this piece was written for. What assumptions does Ehrenreich make about this audience?
2. Consider Ehrenreich's ethos. What is the central argument of this piece? In what ways does her personal experience build her case?
3. Ehrenreich incorporates a range of research and statistics into her essay. Which statistical examples surprised you? Which are most persuasive? Least persuasive? Why?

ReplyDeleteThis sounds great. I do think you should focus specifically on the community that enjoys the electronia genre of music since music, in itself, is a very broad topic. I bet you can find some strong articles to site describing this genre.
You sound like you have a good amount of personal experience to draw upon, too. As you're identifying specific traits of electronica fans, I would think about what these community members have in common in addition to their taste in music. Do they speak alike or dress in similiar fashions?
As I've told others, keep in mind that you should write your narrative as if your audience is not familar with this community. I think this is a great topic; feel free to begin writing your first draft!
Hi Jeff,
ReplyDeleteI think that your idea is really good because it is a community that not many people would think of and only a few people belong too. I feel that it would be very interesting to read your narative because electonica is a genre of music that I am totally unfamiliar with.
It would also be intersesting to hear about the similarities between those who are members of the electronica fan community :)

When it comes to music with me i listen to most everything but i can honestly say i have never heard of electronica. Which in your paper you can show people like myself what it is. It seems like it would be a small community and with your paper it could possibly grow by a few members.
