Valerie's Community Narrative

Happy Weekend everybody :)

I belong in the Short People community. I don't need to pretend it's the "fun-size" or petite community or any other cute names. I'm 5'2.5, I'm short. It's cool, I like it. So I plan on writing about how other short people and myself are trying to establish ourselves with some respect.

What do I mean by needing to establish respect? Pick two people out of a room, one that is 6' and a short person like me. It's almost instinct to follow the taller person rather than someone you can tower over.

I have tipping people for the different areas I plan to cover (i.e. fashion, military, and politics). Within these areas I will explore why this person needed to establish themselves as a leader, how they did it, and the outcome. I will also look at if their work has advanced the community or paved a path for others.

To qualify, I am calling 5'5 and under short. Here is a website I'm using to find some names to mention within my narrative: http://www.tallmenshoes.com/heoffashpe.html

Suggestions, comments, and tips are always appreciated. Thanks guys!

  1. Valerie, this topic sounds great! There is a lot of research out there about how height tends to correspond to leadership roles and personality. While you address many potential areas to cover (fashion, military, politics), you may want to narrow your topic so that you focus on one of these areas more than others.

Since your audience for this piece will be people who do not belong to the Short People community, you have an opportunity to address the tall people of the world directly. You also have the opportunity to take a light or serious tone. Based on your blog entry, I think you're leaning to a conversational tone which works really well.

Have you thought about a specific personal memory or event to focus on for your personal account? You may want to focus on one of the first times you became aware of your height being either a strength or a weakness. Sounds great - keep developing!

  2. This is a really original topic. I'm actually 5'5 but I think it would be really interesting to read about life from a short person's perspective.Even though 5'2.5 isn't exactly short in comparison to the cast of "Little People, Big World," I was thinking you might be able to get some useful quotes on the short life from interviews with the Roloff family. Hope this helps.

  3. Well I love this topic. I'm in the same boat as you as far as height. One thing you can talk about is how a lot of times shorter people will do things to make themselves more part of the norm, such as wearing high heels. Then there are the people who embrace it.

  4. Valerie,

This topic sounds really cool! I'm 5' 10", and I think it would be fun and interesting for people who are taller to be able to read this kind of thing. I like what you are going to incorporate like the quotes and all. I also like how you'll talk about leadership; I've held leadership positions, but I've never really thought about how it might affect someone of short stature.

Good luck with your paper and have fun with it!
