What does it mean to be educated, and who decides?

I think, in today's society, to be educated means to have a college degree. Education means training for a particular career. We are all doing that right now. We all have been through at least 12 years of school and were being educated the entire time, but most of us are not ready for the career we want. It seems kind of like a waste of 12 years. I think we all could have learned what we did in much less time. We are not educated until we are ready to pursue a career.

The people running the companies and governments decide what it means to be educated. To get a well paying job someone needs to have a college degree. So we all have this picture in our head that we most go to college to be successful, because that's what the people who would be hiring us want.

  1. Although college is a large part of the education process, i don't think you absolutely have to go through four years at a university. There are a number of technical classes one can take in high school in order to join the workforce after they graduate. However, i do agree that education is aimed at preparing us for future careers and a college diploma looks better when applying for jobs.

  2. I definitely agree that it is pretty much essential at this point in time to have a college degree to be considered "educated". I think that as time goes on, our world gets more and more advanced so we need more and more schooling. But I don't think that the 12 years are a waste of time. It is more like taking up time to let us mature to a point where we have a better grasp of what we want out of our future.
