Education

1. What does it mean to be educated?

I think being educated means that you have a strong understanding of several topics and subjects.  To be  educated you need to be able to apply what you have learned.  I also think that being educated means you are knowledgeable about deep and serious matters, such as things happening in our country like our economy.  To me, being educated is more than just what we learn from reading a book or doing homework.

2. Who decides what it means to be educated?

All along, we have been taught that you're educated if you go to school and earn a degree from a college or university.  Because of this social norm, I think it's the teachers and professors that decide whether you're educated or not.  Basically, if the teachers and professors do their job, then the students are considered to be educated.  I don't necessarily think this is true, but that's the way our society judges whether or not you're educated.

  1. I agree with what you said about being apply to apply what you have learned. It is one thing to just have something memorized and it is another to really be able to grasp the concept to the point where you can actively use it. But I do feel like who decides what it means to be educated goes much deeper than our teachers. I feel that someone has to tell them what to teach according to the standard of education.
