Homework due Tuesday Nov 30 11:59PM:
Read Barbara Ehrenreich's “Maid to Order: The Politics of Other Women's Work” 479-495 and compose a blog response based on ONE of the following prompts:
1. Consider what audience this piece was written for. What assumptions does Ehrenreich make about this audience?
2. Consider Ehrenreich's ethos. What is the central argument of this piece? In what ways does her personal experience build her case?
3. Ehrenreich incorporates a range of research and statistics into her essay. Which statistical examples surprised you? Which are most persuasive? Least persuasive? Why?

Hi Andrew,
ReplyDeleteI also agree that this is for house wives along with middle-upper class families like in Emilie's response. She uses statistics in order to get people to see things from a maid's point of view, as well as her perspective. The audience can also relate to her because almost everyone has come across "dog hair" and "crusty food" on the floor. She is just so descriptive and includes so many things like the history of house cleaning and what actually happens in cleaning companies. All of these add up and have lead to her great article.
I agree with the fact that some of the audience is house wifes, because they can relate to the piece, but do you think it is at all directed toward men to make them more respectful of the work done by house wifes and maids?
ReplyDeletei think that she aimed to enlighten not just men or women but more specifically the men and women that employ these maids. She strives to reach out to the people that are degrading maids and women that work low wage jobs in order to make their situation easier.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what sean is saying. I believe that the author is speaking to the upperclass and the people who hire these maids. She is trying to make the point that people in the upperclass do not appreciate these minimum wage workers.
