What it Means to be Educated
I think for someone to be educated means they have to have a general knowledge in a variety of subjects. These subjects can be learned in grades K-12, and even in college like our Gen. Ed. Classes. Once a person gains general knowledge, he/she may want to narrow their field of study, such as receiving their degree in a certain subject, so they are highly educated in one area of expertise. I think a lot of people decide what it means to be educated. Someone might set standards for themself, so he/she is deciding what it means to be educated. The schools and state also have a say in what it means to be educated. Schools have a curriculum they must cover during the year. In Virginia, we take SOL’s, or Standards of Learning, to make sure we have covered everything and to test our knowledge in the subject areas. In North Carolina, my brothers and sisters have to take EOG’s, or End of Grade, that test to see what they have learned during the year. These tests are a way for the state to test the education of the students.
I agree with your statement that in order to be educated you have to have general knowledge. Although job fields are becoming highly specialized I still think that the general courses that students have to take are still relevant and vital. I also agree that it is a combination of elements that determine what education means. I think that education is defined by ourselves, the government, employers, and many other entities.
